5 Signs Your Fuse Box Needs Replacing

Your consumer unit — often still called a fuse box — is the single most important safety device in your home's electrical system. When it's old, damaged or missing modern protection, the entire installation is at risk. Here are the five signs we see most often in Barnet and North London homes.

1. It has rewireable fuses instead of MCBs

If you can still see ceramic fuse holders with fuse wire, your unit is from the 1970s or earlier. It has no earth-leakage protection and doesn't meet current BS 7671 wiring regulations.

2. There's no RCD (or the RCD never trips)

RCDs protect against electric shock. Older units either have no RCD at all, or a single RCD that has never been tested. Both are C2 EICR findings and typically require replacement.

3. Frequent nuisance tripping

If a circuit trips every time you use the kettle and toaster together, it's not always overload — it's often a shared RCD failing intermittently or a damaged cable. Modern RCBO consumer units eliminate most nuisance trips.

4. Burning smell, scorching or corrosion

Any discolouration around a fuse holder, a warm cover, or a burning plastic smell means overheating. Stop using the affected circuit and call an electrician immediately.

5. It's plastic and more than 10–15 years old

18th Edition regulations require metal-clad consumer units in domestic properties. Plastic units aren't automatically dangerous, but combined with any of the above they should be replaced.
